Facebook Page Giveaways: Picking a Winner from Post Comments

Facebook Pages are where many local businesses, community groups and long-running brands already talk to their customers. A comment giveaway on your Page is a simple way to reward that audience. Facebook comment sections have their own quirks, though, and a little preparation makes the draw much smoother.
Why run it on your Page
Your Page followers are often existing customers, neighbors and people who've known your business for a while. Comments on Facebook also tend to be longer and more conversational than on some other platforms, which makes them a good place to ask a real question, such as what people would like you to stock next or which menu item they'd bring back.
Step 1: Write a post that does the work
A Facebook giveaway post should answer four questions in the first few lines, before the "See more" cut-off:
- What's the prize?
- How do I enter?
- When does it close?
- Where are the full rules?
For example:
"GIVEAWAY: Win dinner for two at our place! To enter, comment with your favorite dish from our menu. One entry per person, 18+, local pickup only. Closes Friday, June 5 at 7 pm Central. Full rules below."
Then put the full rules underneath or in a linked page: eligibility, how the winner is picked, how they'll be contacted and how long they have to reply. Facebook has its own promotion guidelines, including what you can and can't ask entrants to do. This is general guidance, not legal advice, so read the platform's current rules and check what applies where you are.
Step 2: Decide what counts as an entry
Facebook comment threads branch. People reply to your comments, reply to each other, and tag friends in replies. Decide up front:
- Do replies count, or only top-level comments?
- Does tagging a friend count as an entry by itself?
- Is it one entry per person?
Whatever you choose, write it in the rules. "One entry per person; replies to other comments don't count as separate entries" is clear and easy to apply.
Step 3: Keep an eye on the comments
While the giveaway runs, check the comments a couple of times a day:
- Hide or remove scam comments, especially ones with links or "message me to claim" messages.
- Answer questions about the prize or rules. It keeps the post active and helps people enter correctly.
- Watch for impersonators: accounts using your Page's name and picture. Report them, and remind followers you'll only contact the winner from your real Page.
Step 4: Close it publicly
At the closing time, add a comment saying "Entries are now closed, thank you!" and edit the post to say so. People who find the post later will know they've missed it, and you'll have a clear cut-off if someone asks about a late comment.
Step 5: Load the comments and filter
Go to the Facebook giveaway page and load the comments from your post. Check that your plan covers the number of comments: Free loads up to 600, Silver up to 2,000, Gold up to 5,000 and Platinum is unlimited.
Then match your settings to your rules:
- Duplicate filter on, for one entry per person.
- Hashtag filter on, if your rules required a hashtag or keyword.
- Block list (Silver and above) for your own accounts, staff, family members who help in the business, or anyone else you've excluded.
- Bonus entries (Silver and above) only if your rules announced them, for example for loyalty card members.
After filtering, every eligible entry has an equal chance.
Step 6: Pick winners and substitutes
Choose your number of winners and draw one or two substitutes at the same time. Facebook users don't always check message requests from Pages they haven't messaged before, so a backup is useful if the winner doesn't see your message in time.
Want to make it an event? Run the draw on a live video, or record your screen. Gold and Platinum add a countdown before the reveal and let you put your branding on the result. On any plan, save the winner certificate to share with the announcement.
Step 7: Contact the winner and announce
Message the winner from your Page, and reply to their comment so they know to check their messages. Then post the announcement on the original giveaway post as a comment, and as a new post or story if you like:
"Congratulations to [winner's name], picked at random from all eligible comments! We've sent you a message. Thanks to everyone who entered, we loved reading which dishes you'd order. Remember, we'll only ever contact winners from this Page and will never ask for payment."
Running the same giveaway on Instagram too?
Many businesses post a giveaway on both their Facebook Page and Instagram. You can draw from each separately, or, on the Platinum plan, combine entries from both posts into one multi-network draw. If you combine them, keep the duplicate filter in mind and say in the rules whether entering on both platforms counts once or twice.
