Giveaway Ideas for Etsy and Handmade Sellers

Handmade crafts and a wrapped parcel on a maker's workbench

When you make things by hand, every prize has a real cost: materials, hours at the workbench, packaging and postage. A giveaway can still be worth it, especially if it introduces your work to people who'll love it. The trick is to choose a prize and format that showcase your craft without turning into a second job.

This guide is for makers who sell on Etsy or other marketplaces, at markets, or through their own site, and promote their work on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok or YouTube.

Run it on social, not in your shop

Marketplaces have their own policies about promotions, contests and what you can ask buyers to do. The simplest approach for most sellers is to run the giveaway on your social media accounts and link to your shop from there. Check your marketplace's seller policies before mentioning a giveaway in listings or buyer messages. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

Prize ideas that fit handmade businesses

A piece you already have

Overstock, a sample, a slightly different colorway, or the last piece from a retired collection. It costs you nothing extra to make, and it's ready to ship the day the winner replies.

A custom piece

Personalization is something big stores struggle to offer. A custom name necklace, a pet portrait, a monogrammed bag. It's exciting for the winner, and it shows followers what custom orders look like. Set limits in the rules: size, colors, and a realistic making time.

A mini version

Make a smaller version of a popular item. It's quicker to make and cheaper to ship, while still representing your work.

Shop credit

Credit toward any item lets the winner choose something they truly want, and they visit your shop to do it. They may end up adding to their order.

A maker collaboration

Team up with makers in complementary crafts: a potter and a candle maker, a knitter and a soap maker, a printmaker and a framer. A joint bundle feels special, and each maker reaches the other's audience.

Entry ideas that show off your process

  • "Pick the next colorway." Show three options in progress. Comments double as a poll.
  • "Name this piece." Choose your favorite name separately; the prize winner is picked at random from all entries.
  • "What should I make next?" A great source of product ideas.
  • "Guess how long this took." Fun to answer, and it quietly educates followers on the work behind handmade pricing. Keep the winner random, not the closest guess, unless you clearly run it as a different kind of contest.

Show the making

Handmade work sells on story. A short video of the prize being made, from raw material to finished piece, is often more engaging than a static product shot, and it works as a Reel, TikTok or YouTube Short. Post a second clip of the piece being packed once you have a winner.

Count the real cost first

Before announcing anything, add up:

  1. Materials.
  2. Your making time, valued at what you'd charge.
  3. Packaging.
  4. Shipping to the furthest place you'll accept, including any customs forms or fees.

If the total feels uncomfortable, choose a smaller prize or limit entry to the countries you already ship to. A modest prize you're happy to give is better than a big one you resent.

Write rules that protect your time

  • Eligibility: age and the countries you'll ship to.
  • Making time: for custom prizes, say "ships within four weeks of design approval" or similar.
  • Customization limits: sizes, colors, materials.
  • Claim window: how long the winner has to reply before you move to a backup.
  • Not a purchase: make it clear entry is free and that buying doesn't improve the chance of winning.

Picking the winner

When entries close, load your post's comments into RaffleSelect. Most handmade giveaways fit comfortably within the Free plan's 600-comment limit, which includes the duplicate filter (one entry per person) and the hashtag filter.

If friends and family comment to support you, which they often do, you may want to exclude them so the prize goes to a new customer. The block list on the Silver plan ($5 a month) leaves named accounts out of the draw automatically. Silver also adds bonus entries, useful if you want to thank past customers with extra chances.

Pick a substitute or two in case your winner is outside your shipping area or doesn't reply.

Turn entrants into customers, gently

After the winner is announced, thank everyone who entered and share a small, time-limited offer. Many entrants were interested enough to comment, and a gentle nudge is often all they need to place a first order. Don't overdo it; one thank-you post is plenty.

Start your giveaway

Pick a prize you can comfortably make and ship, film a bit of the process, and when entries close, choose your winner from the RaffleSelect home page, or go directly to the Instagram or TikTok giveaway page.
