How Long Should a Giveaway Run?

Desk calendar with circled days, an hourglass and a gift box

There's no single right answer to how long a giveaway should run, but there is a right answer for your giveaway. It depends on where you're posting, how often your audience checks in, what you're giving away and what else is going on. This post walks through the trade-offs so you can choose with confidence.

The trade-off in one sentence

A short giveaway creates urgency but may miss people; a long giveaway reaches more people but loses momentum. Your job is to find the point where most of your audience has had a fair chance to see it, without it fading into the background.

Common lengths and when they fit

24 to 48 hours

Good for flash giveaways, live events, launch-day promotions and quick seasonal moments. Works best when your audience is very active and you can promote it heavily in that window, for example with stories or a live stream. The risk: people who only check in every few days will miss it entirely.

3 to 7 days

A comfortable default for many businesses. It covers a weekend and a few weekdays, so people with different routines have a chance to see it. There's enough time for a couple of reminders without the post getting stale.

1 to 2 weeks

Useful for bigger prizes, collaborations with another brand, or giveaways spread across several platforms. It gives partners time to share and lets you build up to the draw. You'll need a plan to keep it visible, or it'll quietly slip out of people's feeds.

Longer than two weeks

Usually only makes sense for a campaign, such as a summer-long series with several draws, or a milestone giveaway with lots of promotion. For a single post, interest often drops off long before the end.

Platform matters

Each platform shows content to people a little differently, and that affects how long a post stays in front of your audience.

  • Instagram and Facebook: posts tend to get most of their attention in the first few days. A run of around a week, with stories as reminders, suits many accounts.
  • TikTok: a video can be picked up unexpectedly, sometimes days after posting. A short window keeps things manageable, but be ready for a surge in comments.
  • YouTube: videos are found long after upload. Viewers may comment weeks later, so be very clear about the closing date in the video and description, and update the description once it's over.

These are general patterns, not rules. Your own past posts are the best guide: look at when comments usually slow down on your account.

Other things to factor in

Your audience's routine

If most of your followers check in on weekends, make sure your giveaway includes one. If they're busy professionals, a closing time on a weekday evening might suit them better than early morning.

Holidays and events

For a seasonal giveaway, work backward from when the prize needs to arrive. A Father's Day giveaway that closes the day before Father's Day won't get a physical prize there in time.

Your own availability

Pick a closing time when you'll be around to run the draw and contact the winner promptly. A giveaway that ends while you're on holiday leaves entrants waiting and wondering.

The size of the prize

Bigger prizes can justify longer runs and more promotion. A small thank-you giveaway doesn't need two weeks.

Whatever you choose, be exact

The length matters less than being clear about it. Always state:

  • The closing date and time
  • The time zone
  • That comments after the closing time won't count

"Closes Sunday, June 14 at 8 pm Eastern" leaves no room for argument. "Ends this weekend" does.

Keep it visible while it runs

A simple reminder plan helps any length of giveaway:

  1. Launch: the giveaway post plus a story or community post pointing to it.
  2. Middle: a reminder, maybe sharing a few favorite comments.
  3. Final day: a "last chance" reminder with the exact closing time.
  4. Close: a quick comment or story saying entries are closed.

Draw promptly when it ends

Once entries close, run the draw soon, ideally the same day or the next. Load your comments into RaffleSelect, apply the filters your rules promised, and pick your winners with substitutes. Longer giveaways often gather more comments, so check your plan covers them: Free loads up to 600 comments, Silver up to 2,000, Gold up to 5,000 and Platinum is unlimited.

When your giveaway closes, pick your winner on RaffleSelect.
